The Postgraduate Program in Language Technologies (PPGTEL), linked to the Department of Human Sciences (DCH V) of the State University of Bahia (UNEB), is located in Santo Antônio de Jesus – BA, Brazil. Approved by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education – CAPES, its history begins in 2024, offering a Master’s Degree course.

PPGTEL aims to train researchers in the fields of Linguistics and Literature to study the production of meaning, innovations, and uses of language in various technologies, especially those of contemporary times. From this perspective, it considers languages as technologies and various technologies as symbolic and cultural goods. It also emphasizes new (multi)literacies in order to contribute to a diverse society and to basic education, in particular. The Program has the following specific characteristics:

a) It articulates three Literature courses (English, Portuguese, and Spanish), offering a program that researches the workings of language and literature in the three languages, as well as prioritizing teaching and learning issues in the area;

b) It engages with technologies (books, radio, television, cinema, digital media, etc.) and their relationship with the functioning and circulation of various genres of texts/discourses, emphasizing new (multi)literacies, which addresses contemporary demands;

c) It presents a proposal for working with creative writing, considering the rich history of DCH V on the subject and innovating in its offering, since no other postgraduate or undergraduate course at UNEB has included such an approach in its curriculum;

d) It respects, values, and focuses on the rich history of the Recôncavo region and its people, through research in language and literature that engages with the community, without losing sight of other contexts;

e) It incorporates extension activities into its curriculum through the offering of the component “Extension Activities to Support the Community in Language Technologies,” which addresses the function and social responsibility of the public university and, particularly, of university extension articulated with teaching and research. Furthermore, it reflects on the implications of extension in the academic-professional training process in the field of Linguistics and Literature, developing and carrying out extension activities of great social importance, in a multi- and interdisciplinary approach, focusing on the uses of languages and technologies.
